Making Us a Name – M.E. Cornell, November 1861

“That the name, Seventh-day Adventists, is truly representative of our faith and practice, cannot be denied. That it is modest and humble, and points to both the Father and Son, is also beyond question. Why then should it not be heartily adopted by every lover of present truth?”

God’s Rest by E.J. Waggoner

“The Sabbath is kept only by those who rest in the Lord all the time. While nobody can be a Sabbath-keeper and ignore the day upon which God has placed his blessing, it is equally true that the man who does not continually rest in the Lord does not keep the Sabbath.”

“If ministers or members from the Seventh-day Baptists regard it their duty to come with us, under the impression that they can serve the cause of God better, we shall give them a place with us.”

Practical Working of Sunday Laws – A Report from 1896

“During 1895 and 1896, no less than seventh-six Seventh-day Adventists were prosecuted in the United States and Canada for existing Sunday laws. Of these, twenty-eight served terms of various lengths in jails, chain-gang, etc., aggregating 1,144 days, or nearly three and one-half years for a single person.”

“Close Questioning” – A Look at Pioneer Baptismal Examination

Some time ago the question was raised: What did Ellen G. White mean when she described the ‘critical examination’ and ‘close questioning’ of baptismal candidates? In the process of finding out, several quotes from Mrs. White on the subject, as well as contemporary pioneer reports of early Advent baptisms and examinations were collected. These are…

“Whether a person… no opinion to offer” – Life Sketches Appendix

“Whether a person… no opinion to offer” – Life Sketches Appendix

We have no sympathy with the speculations in which many indulge in regard to the nature or order of the Holy Spirit. Whether a person, or an emanation from the Father and Son, as some teach, or a manifestation of the power of God, as others argue, we have no opinion to offer. They who affirm that the Spirit is a person, differ materially among themselves as ot the exact definmition of the term person, and therefore the mere affirmation settles nothing even in their own minds. The being of God is incomprehensible. We accept the fact, and there we stand; reverence forbids that we should advance any further.”
